Candidatus Scalindua, a Biological Solution to Treat Saline Recirculating Aquaculture System Wastewater

چکیده

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are promising candidates for the sustainable development of industry. A current limitation RAS is production and potential accumulation nitrogenous wastes, ammonium (NH4+), nitrite (NO2?) nitrate (NO3?), which could affect fish health welfare. In a previous experiment, we have demonstrated that marine anammox bacteria Candidatus Scalindua was candidate to treat wastewater (WW) marine, cold-water RAS. However, activity negatively impacted after direct exposure WW. study, further investigated Ca. WW in three-phase experiment. first phase (control, 83 days), fed synthetic feed, enriched NH4+, NO2? trace element (TE) mix. Removal rates 98.9% 99.6% NH4+ NO2?, respectively, were achieved. second (116 gradually increased nitrogen-enriched over period about 80 days. last (79 needs TE supplementation they fully acclimated 100% Our results show gradual resulted successful acclimation WW, with maintained high removal both throughout Despite slight decrease relative abundance (from 21.4% 16.7%), remained dominant species granules whole We conclude can be successfully used without addition TE, once given enough time acclimate its new substrate. Future studies need determine specific optimal treatment by at pilot scale.

Enhancement of Anaerobic Digestion to Treat Saline Sludge from Recirculating Aquaculture Systems

The effectiveness of carbohydrate addition and the use of ultrasonication as a pretreatment for the mesophilic anaerobic digestion of saline aquacultural sludge was assessed. Analyses were conducted using an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR), which included stopped gas production attributed to the saline inhibition. After increasing the C : N ratio, gas production was observed, and the ...

Biological phosphate removal in a prototype recirculating aquaculture treatment system

Efforts to reduce phosphorus concentrations in aquaculture systems have mainly dealt with improving the bioavailability of phosphorus in fish feed. Once released into the culture water, phosphorus is generally left untreated and discharged with the effluent water. In the present study, results are presented on a prototype recirculating treatment system originally designed for removal of organic...

Membrane filtration coupled with chemical precipitation to treat recirculating aquaculture system effluents.

Effluents from recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) contain high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorous wastes and thus often require proper treatment to prevent potential detrimental impacts on receiving water bodies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of membrane filtration coupled with chemical precipitation as a pretreatment step with emphasis on phosphorus rem...

Halophyte filter beds for treatment of saline wastewater from aquaculture.

The expansion of aquaculture and the recent development of more intensive land-based marine farms require efficient and cost-effective systems for treatment of highly nutrient-rich saline wastewater. Constructed wetlands with halophytic plants offer the potential for waste-stream treatment combined with production of valuable secondary plant crops. Pilot wetland filter beds, constructed in trip...
